Let’s Build a Street. Let’s Build a Town.

We’ve been enjoying listening to a new Ella Jenkins record, called My Street Begins at My House. I love Ella Jenkins, ever since I discovered her through a chance find at Diversity Thrift. She was a good friend of Pete Seeger, and an important folk music educator.

At the start of one song, she invites the listener to get out some paper, and draw their own street and their own town, and the people in it. So we did, and here’s a picture of Cyrus with our drawings.

  1. There is something disquieting about the dark figure cycling through this otherwise joyful neighborhood with his shadowy cat. The other figures — children and horse — are colorful, childlike and fully featured. But the cyclist is merely a dark specter. A traveler, unseen by the living souls who surround him.
